I picked up a like new 12 GA Remington 11-87 Premier w/ Enhanced Engraving & a LC 28' Rem Choke bbl for under $500 today from a local gun shop. It included the box, manual, three Rem Chokes (IC, M & F) and choke wrench. I'm thinking of starting to shoot sporting clays and was wondering if this shotgun would work? What is the difference between the Premier and Sporting Clays model of the 11-87? When did Remington start putting the safety lock on thier autos? Is the triggerguard aluminum?

Nice find. The Premier models are designed to be field guns, so it should handle most 1-1/8oz loads just fine, but may have problems cycling lighter loads. YMMV, so if you want to use 7/8 or 1oz loads, there's no reason not to give them a try. Hope you enjoy your new gun!

The old 1187 sporting clays model used a shorter mag tube and forend than the field models. Your Premier is very close to the current 1100 Sporting12, so I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I have never seen an 11-87 with a shorter magazine and fore end. Not saying they don't exist, just that I have never seen one. Seen Special Field models with the shortened fore end.

If you go to the Remington website and download their 1100/1187 Owners' manual, p11-12 have notes on the old 1187 Sporting. These guns had a 3-shot mag tube and used a special rubber grommet when assembling the forend. It was an early attempt to change the weight distribution of the gun.
Frankly, I prefer my 1100 Sporting 12.

I have a left-handed 1187 Premier Light Contour and it handles 1 oz. target loads just fine.

ahh glad i found this post im just getting ready to buy a new in the box light contour lefty 1187 for doves and pheasants but was wondering if the 1187 would cycle the 1 ounce loads. so thanks 870 lefty, now the guy whants 850.00 for the gun is that to much for this very rare and hard to find gun? it comes in the box with papers and choke tubes and a wrench. basicly its new but i know they wernt 850.00 when they were still being made. if it was a right handed version im positive the price would be alot lower. we leftys sure get the shaft

Good Luck With Your New Gun, You Will Love It.
I Have The Same One Bought New In 2006, Still Looks Like New Like Yours 2000 Rounds Later.
I Do Not Know Why Remington Ever Stopped Making The 11-87 Premier Model.
It Is A Great Gun
ENJOY IT

Hello All,
Just checking to see if I got a good deal. I just picked up a 1187 premier l/c 26' with factory hard case 4 chokes 3 boxes of shells & padded soft carrying case. The Rem looks pristine 'absolutely new.' Paid $525 cash. Also does anyone have any opinions on this firearm. Thanks.

I just picked up a 1187 premier 12 ga. L/C 26' with factory hard case 4 chokes 3 boxes of shells & soft case. This Rem looks 'pristine' no signs of use. Paid $525 cash for the whole pkg. Do you folks think this was a good deal? Does anyone else have this gun if so please post your thoughts. It looks like a winner to me. I just gave my grandson my trusty 870 for his birthday and bought this to replace it. I am a one gun kind of fellow who will use it to deer, rabbit, dove ect..... Thanks.

Only semi-relevant. I found a 11-87 LT20 pretty much as described in the original post. According to the manual it would handle all loads. I found that with light target loads for sporting clays I would get a light strike on the second (reloaded round). After a thorough cleaning I shot with 3 inch loads and never had a problem. Next I went to 2 3/4 inch field loads and never a problem. Next was to load a 2 3/4 field load for first shot and follow with a light target load. No problem. Have yet to return to straight target loads but actually think gun will 'break in' and run smoothly on light loads. One can always dream.

Firing pin strike has absolutely nothing to do with the load. As long as the action cycles and cocks the hammer there is nothing different when you pull the trigger. Could have been dirt in the firing pin channels and harder primers or several other combinations.
