A cooking sensation since its introduction in 1994, the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is a portable electric indoor grill manufactured by Spectrum Brands. Promoted by two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist George Foreman, the grill is commonly known as the George Foreman grill. In Asia, the same grill is promoted by both Foreman and film star Jackie Chan. The grilling machine price varies depending on the model and vendor. It has sold more than 100 million units worldwide.

The Unique Design

The grill designer, Michael Boehm, created a slanting surface that allows fat to drain from hamburgers, pork chops, chicken and other meats. It also features a floating hinge to accommodate thick cuts of meat and chicken parts.

The clamshell shape of the grill allows both sides of the meat to cook at the same time, making it not only a healthy cooking method but a time-saving appliance for busy cooks. A removable drip tray holds the drippings as the meat cooks, thus reducing the amount of fat in the food.

Before You Use the George Foreman Grill

Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine Cooking Times

The electric grill really is a lean mean grilling machine, but before using it, review the entire manual. Clean the removable parts with soap and water. Also wipe the nonstick grill plates with a damp sponge or cloth to remove any dust. After reassembling the grill, place it where it won't touch cabinets or walls.

Keep the grill and power cord out of the reach of children and pets. Never use metal utensils, spatulas, scouring pads, steel wool or abrasive cleaners on the grilling machine. Do not immerse the grill in water.

The Grill Capacity

The original George Foreman grill is large enough to cook a meal for two to four people. Two large steaks, four hamburgers or chicken parts or up to six hot dogs or sausages will fit on the grill.

Later versions of the grilling machine have various improvements and additions to the original design, including a flat griddle, muffin pan and waffle plates. The newest George Foreman grills' capacities range from two to nine servings.

How to Use the Grilling Machine

Plug the grill into a wall outlet. The power light will come on. Allow the grill to heat three to five minutes before adding the meat or vegetables. You can wipe oil over the nonstick grill to make cooking and cleaning easier, but don't use aerosol oil sprays. They may damage the nonstick coating. Use a potholder to open the lid when you add the food to the grill.

Making Beef or Turkey Burgers

To make burgers, use your favorite recipe or George Foreman's 'powerburger.' It includes chopped vegetables, bread crumbs and a 3/4-pound hamburger. Form four 4-inch patties and place them on the grill.

Close the lid and cook for five to six minutes. Open the lid and turn the burgers once. Cook for another two to three minutes. Hamburgers and other ground meats should always be heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the burgers from the grill and serve immediately with all the fixings.

Making Pork or Lamb Chops

Season four chops with your favorite spices, such as rosemary, onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Heat the grill for three to five minutes and then add the chops. Cook for five to seven minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. If desired, turn once during cooking to ensure even cooking on both sides of the chops.

Making Chicken Breasts

Marinate four 6-ounce boneless, skinless chicken breasts for at least 30 minutes in your favorite marinade. Heat the grilling machine. Add the chicken breasts and close the lid. Cook for three-and-a-half minutes and turn them over. Continue cooking for another two to five minutes to an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

Making Grilled Vegetables

Slice an assortment of vegetables, such as eggplant, mushrooms, onions, peppers, tomatoes, yellow squashes and zucchinis. Heat the grill for three to five minutes. Brush the vegetables lightly with olive oil and then add them to the grill. Cook eggplant for six to eight minutes. Grill mushrooms, onions, squashes and zucchini for three to five minutes. Heat tomatoes for approximately one minute.

Cleaning the Grill

Unplug the grill and allow it to completely cool. Use the enclosed spatula to scrape fat and food particles off the grill and into the drip pan. Clean the grill with paper towels or a wet sponge. Dry it with paper towels or a soft dishcloth.

Remove the drip pan. Pour out the liquids and wipe the pan with paper towels to remove the grease. Wash the drip pan with dishwashing liquid and hot water. Allow it to air dry before reinstalling on the grill.

A George Foreman Grill

The George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, commonly known as the George Foreman Grill, is a portable electrically heated grill manufactured by Spectrum Brands. It is promoted by former boxing champion George Foreman. Since its introduction in 1994, over 100 million George Foreman grills have been sold worldwide.[2]

History[edit]

The concept for the grill was created by Michael Boehm of Batavia, Illinois. The original intention was to create an indoor grill that would provide a unique benefit of cooking on both sides at once.[3] A second key benefit was to reduce the fat content of hamburgers and other meats by draining away the fat into a separate reservoir. Michael Boehm designed the product with a floating hinge and slanted grilling surface to accommodate foods of different thicknesses and drain fat away from the food. Engineering work was performed by Bob Johnson. Boehm and Johnson brought a JVC camcorder and a sample of the product in bright yellow to the office of Barbara Westfield at Salton, Inc. The video was played, showing fat dripping from the grill into the collection tray. They presented the product as 'The Fajita Express'. The fajita grill had been promoted at industry trade shows in the early 1990s, but received little interest.[4]

The slanted grill concept was pitched by Tsann Kuen to Salton Inc. After one year, and several trade shows, Salton sent samples of the grill to George Foreman's colleagues, who then sent the grill to Foreman to test. Boehm was not involved in teaming up the grill and Foreman. Salton made several changes to the technical function of the product, removing the four risers meant for the user to lift up the grill, slide in one of the two included trays, and fill taco shells. One tray was for grease of fajita meat, and the second tray was to hold a taco shell, as was shown in the demonstration to Westfield in the original presentation at the Salton office in Mount Prospect, Illinois.

The Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, as it became known, was introduced in 1994 and promoted with distinctive infomercials which featured Foreman. A combination of his affable personality and the unique features of the product made it a huge success. Such was the popularity of these infomercials that Foreman's tagline, 'It's so good I put my name on it!',[5] is now part of popular culture. In Asia, the grill is endorsed and promoted by both George Foreman and Jackie Chan.

Design[edit]

The product has a clamshell design that simultaneously heats the top and bottom surfaces of the food, eliminating the need to flip it.[6] Each heating surface is grooved to reduce contact area, and covered in a non-stick coating. The lower heating surface is angled to allow hot, liquid fat and other fluids to drain through the grooves into a removable drip tray, which shows the amount removed from the food. This arrangement has been marketed as a way to 'knock out the fat', suggesting a healthier way to cook.

The grill is offered in various sizes for cooking individual or multiple servings. In 2006, the George Foreman 'Next Grilleration' Health Grill was launched, featuring detachable grilling plates for easier cleaning. It has gone through several other versions, differing in their control interfaces and design.

In 2014, an updated Foreman Grill was released called the 'Evolve Grill'. The Evolve grill features interchangeable PTFE-free ceramic plates.[7] The plates available are the traditional grill plates, waffle plates, a bake dish, mini burgers, a flat griddle, and a muffin pan.[8]

Reception[edit]

The worldwide popularity of the George Foreman grill has resulted in sales of over 100 million units since it was first launched, a feat that was achieved in a little over 15 years. Although Foreman has never confirmed exactly how much he has earned from the endorsement, Salton, Inc. paid him $138 million in 1999 in order to buy out the right to use his name. Previous to that he was being paid about 40 percent of the profits on each grill sold, earning him $4.5 million a month in payouts at its peak, so it is estimated he has made a total of over $200 million from the endorsement, a sum that is substantially more than he earned as a boxer.[9]

Competition[edit]

The success of the George Foreman Grill spawned a variety of similar celebrity-endorsed products, such as the Evander Holyfield Real Deal Grill, for which Holyfield starred in a 2007 infomercial,[10][11] and the Carl Lewis Health Grill. The Jackie Chan Grill is the same grill as the George Foreman grill, but targets the Asian market, and is endorsed by both Jackie Chan and George Foreman. None of these imitators, however, achieved the level of success of the Foreman Grill.[12]

In popular culture[edit]

  • On Nickelodeon's Drake & Josh, it was parodied as the Gary Coleman grill in which they are arrested by the FBI because they were stolen.
  • In U.S. version of The Office, Michael Scott steps on a George Foreman Grill in 'The Injury'.
  • On the animated television series King of the Hill, the grill is a pivotal subject of the episode 'Boxing Luanne', in which lead character Hank Hill insults George Foreman by referring to the grill as a 'novelty grill', leading a livid Foreman to call for the fight between Foreman's daughter, Freeda, and Hank's niece, Luanne.
  • On the animated television series Futurama In the episode 'Raging Bender' during a fight between the robots Bender and Destructor, George Foreman is a commentator and he references a new grill that distributes the fat straight into his mouth.
  • A Play-Doh set was created to look like a George Foreman grill.
  • The History Channel television show Million Dollar Genius tells the story of how Michael Boehm invented the grill and George Foreman became the spokesperson for the product.
  • In the United Kingdom, the product could be mis-named as the ‘George Formby’ grill, especially by older people.
